How Many Grafts Do You Need? Calculation Guide

Graft needs by loss pattern: current 2026 ranges for hairline, crown and extensive areas, plus donor math.

September 1, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer: Hairline correction 1,500–2,500 grafts, crown coverage 3,000–4,000, extensive loss 4,500–6,000+. The exact number cannot be set without measuring donor density.

Graft ranges by area

AreaTypical rangeNote
Hairline / temples1,500–2,500Single grafts needed for naturalness
Crown (vertex)2,500–4,000Spiral direction needs care
Front + crown combined4,000–5,500Single-session limit at most clinics

Why donor math matters

A healthy donor area yields 6,000–8,000 grafts in a lifetime. Burning the donor in the first operation leaves nothing for areas that thin later. Good clinics propose a sustainable plan, not “maximum grafts”.

Photo pre-evaluation

Most clinics offer free pre-evaluation. Send 4 photos: front, both sides, crown — dry hair, no flash, same lighting. You get a graft estimate and price range within 24 hours.

How graft count moves price

55–65% of price comes from graft count. Example: at €1.20/graft, 2,500 grafts ≈ €3,000 territory; 4,500 grafts approaches €5,000 — though package prices usually run below graft×rate because hotel/transfers are fixed. Use the estimator on the price guide for current averages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on price, process and safety.

How many grafts for a hairline?

Most corrections need 1,500–2,500 grafts. Deeply receded corners can reach 3,000. The exact number is set from the hairline shape and donor density.

What is the band for the crown?

Coverage typically takes 3,000–4,000 grafts. The crown swirl uses more grafts per area. Hairline plus crown in one session can hit the donor limit.

How is the Norwood scale used?

Norwood 2–3 is often a hairline correction, 4–5 hairline plus crown, 6–7 extensive loss and a likely second session. The scale is an estimate, confirmed with photos.

What is the donor limit?

Safe extraction is usually around 4,000–6,000 grafts per session. Going past that thins the donor and spoils a second session. “Unlimited grafts” is a red flag.

What does overharvesting cause?

Patchy donor, a need to wear a hat, and no grafts left for a second session. If the quoted graft count disagrees with donor photos, ask.

Can I get a count from photos?

Yes. Free photo pre-evaluation is standard. It gives a band, not a locked number. Bloodwork and hands-on measurement on the morning of surgery lock it in.

When is a second session needed?

If the donor allows, 12–18 months later for crown thickening or further loss. If the first session spends the donor, there is no second chance. Ask for the plan up front.

When do beard grafts (BHT) come in?

When scalp donor is short, beard or chest grafts can support. The tissue is different. They fill, they do not build a hairline. The price band sits above classic FUE.

Are density and graft count the same?

No. The same 3,000 grafts can be placed at different per-cm² density. A natural look is angle plus packing plus hairline design, not a large number alone.

How should I use the estimator?

Note the bands when you request quotes. Do not only ask “how many grafts?” Ask “does this band fit my donor?” Inflating the count can make the per-graft fee look smaller.
